FCS Financial and ALIANZAS Business Internship Program - (8-Week Internship)

We have partnered again this year with ALIANZAS to help us create an eight-week Business Internship Program for Latino/Latina college students. Below is a little more information about ALIANZAS: 

ALIANZAS, a collaborative initiative of the University of Missouri Extension and the UMKC Institute for Human Development, is uniquely situated to facilitate the success of Latino/a interns participating in FCS Financial’s summer internship program. ALIANZAS was established to enhance and support MU Extension’s capacity to form alliances and best respond to the needs of Latino residents throughout the state of Missouri by promoting effective intercultural communication.  Effective intercultural communication is also essential to the both the recruitment and support of Latino summer interns.  Significantly, Latino/a communities are highly group-oriented, and the family is of central importance within individual decision-making.  In order to effectively recruit and provide support for Latino/a summer interns, it is critical to gain the trust and confidence of each student’s parents and extended family.  ALIANZAS will not only help to build the necessary relationships, but can facilitate effective intercultural communication to ensure that the student has a successful internship experience. 

Working with several mentors, interns learn the components of the agricultural lending business.  Interns will work primarily in our Central Office in Jefferson City, Missouri, but will also spend time out in our retail offices with our Marketplace Staff.  Interns will spend time with all departments within the organization.  The last two weeks of the internship program will be tailored to the intern’s major area of interest in the company.
 
Interns will learn the components of the lending process from taking the application all the way to the loan closing, and recording it in the company’s books.  Time will be spent with various departments such as: Human Resources, Compliance, Operations, Marketing, Accounting and Finance, Credit, Scorecard Lending, Information Technology, Sales and Support, Appraisal, and Risk Management. 

This position is classified as Non-Exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act.

DEADLINE:  This posting closes on January 31, 2019.  Interviews for this opportunity will be held in late February/early March at our Central Office Location in Jefferson City, MO.

Internship Parameters:

Eligible interns must be:

  • Latino/Latina
  • Enrolled as an undergraduate (sophomore, junior or senior) or as a graduate student in a 4-year institution of higher education in Missouri
  • Preference given to those first in their family to be enrolled in an institution of higher education
  • Preference given to those majoring in business, finance, agriculture, HR, or a related field 
  • The number of Latino internships being offered is up to 2
  • The internships will take place in the Summer of 2019 over a period of 8 weeks
  • The location of the internship site will primarily be at FCS Financial Central Office in Jefferson City, Missouri
  • Compensation for interns is $14 per hour
  • FCS Financial will provide for reasonable housing and transportation costs and a per diem to cover the cost of food.

 

Responsibilities/Duties

Percentage Job Functions
50% Internship Program - (8 Weeks)
  • Learn the components of the lending process
  • Learn credit fundamentals and credit philosophy
  • Learn the process of appraising real and chattel properties
  • Learn the variety of risk management options offered by FCS Financial including crop, livestock, and life insurance.
20% Projects
  • Complete one or more projects identified by FCS that are hands-on in nature and designed to add value to the company. 
  • Presentations to the Board of Directors, senior leadership, mentors and other staff will be conducted towards the end of the internship.
20% Communication
  • Work with several mentors within various areas of the Association.
  • Interact with FCS staff as a team member.
10% Marketing
  • Learn about customer relationships and marketing and contribute to FCS image as the leading agriculture financial institution committed to customers.
